Get Fit with Judy Troth

I’ve been writing this column for about 10 years now. Wow! It doesn’t seem like it’s been that long; guess I’ve been having fun since the time has flown. I hope my message hasn’t changed, though. We all need to move, stretch, lift, breathe and studies are showing that it’s more important than ever. I’ve heard from many of you over the years that you enjoy this column. My sincere hope for the future is that you do more than simply enjoy – my hope is you begin to do something about it!
Two things that have become apparent in recent years is our increasingly sedentary lifestyles, and our ever expanding waistlines. The two go hand in hand; we sit more than we move, and we continue to eat like we did when we were 15. The more we sit, the stiffer we become and therefore, the less able we become to do ordinary things, like playing with grandchildren, or getting off the floor. It’s high time for all of us to commit to a better lifestyle.
Sitting is now considered to be the ‘new smoking.’ In other words, sitting is as detrimental to your health as smoking is. How many of you have a job where you sit most of the day? Do you get out of breath walking to your mailbox or upstairs in your home? When you do get out of your chair, do you have to take a minute to stretch before you start moving? Is getting out of a chair a challenge? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you are probably sitting too much! Some researchers recommend getting up and moving around every thirty minutes or so. Don’t think that’s enough, though: the American Heart Association now recommends that we all need 300 minutes of exercise each week! Some of you count steps: 10,000 steps is about 3 ½ miles- that will take somewhere between 40-60 minutes for most of us.
Just moving is the place for all of us to start, but it isn’t the whole story: strength exercises are so important for loads of reasons, as is a regular program of flexibility and balance.
I keep saying that it’s never too late for us to start moving. It isn’t, but really, now is the best time. If you are “out of shape” today, what about tomorrow? Wouldn’t it be better to start now?
Till next time…get out of that chair!
